Boulder,Colorado’s legendary polyethnic cajun slamgrass jam band Leftover Salmon have released their first studio album in eight years and they are in fine form. Infused with two new members, they sound as though they are ready to spend the summer playing festivals.

Never a band to commit themselves exclusively to one style of music, LS opens the disc with the laid back cajun-flavored “Gulf Of Mexico,” contemplating life after the BP oil spill. “Kentucky Skies” is a straight up traditional bluegrass number, while “BayouTown” would be at home on a country album.

There’s lightning quick finger picking on “Keep Driving,” and the title track instrumental, both of which feature the bands trademark amazing mandolin and banjo workouts, spotlighting the groups remarkable musicianship. “Walking Shoes” is a deep grooved shuffle that sounds old-timey and fresh at the same time.

Ultimately this is a disc of traveling music. LS exploresAmericaand her music from coast to coast and stem to stern. Consider this a great audio postcard. If radio ready pop leaves you cold, then Leftover Salmon is the perfect soundtrack for your summer road trip, wherever it may take you.
