The PsuedoSurfers have Italian names and great haircuts but seem to be shy about giving up too many details about themselves or where they’re from. And can you blame them?

They are giving away this amazing release, 5, count ‘em, 1-2-3-4-5, phenomenal songs, for free, and if we all knew where they lived, we’d show expecting them to give us other things for free as well. “I need an amazing toaster, Psuedosurfers, may I have yours?” And being nice enough to give away great music, Enrico and Silvia, guitar and bass respectively, would probably confer and agree, probably a bit too hastily and give the toaster away. In the morning, it would occur to them, Damn! That was a rash decision.

But we made that person happy, so it’s a small price to pay.

And so it goes with these songs, “The Jungles of Iran,” “Semantics,” and “1664.” Spacey, trippy and yet surprisingly full and dense compositions make for some pretty noise that bears repeated listening. I find a lot of what’s called shoegaze, sort of pretentious, but this works really well. Noisy enough, these constructs turn into pop before they become irritating. “Space” is downright pretty, with a breathy buried vocal. It’ll leave you wanting more.
