Brendon Thomas is the man responsible for the act, Forever in Motion, and the album, Sunrise, an achingly pretty, high lonesome sort of recording that’ll make you want to head out for the open road to discover America and yourself, quicker’n you can say On the Road.
His portraits of the world whether accompanied by a full band or a simple unadorned acoustic guitar and melody are filled with such hopeful anticipation and promise, like fledgling birds taking flight from a nest. It all feels like Spring.
His emotions are laid bare but he’s not unburdening himself. It’s just how it is. On “Busted Rope,” Thomas relates a tough tale with a casual tone. “While my old man’s ghost was having a drink somewhere/My mama blew town when I was 3/And he did his best to stick around for me/I hope he knows I love him for that/Giving up that wild life for me.”
Most everything here feels like a celebration of sorts, even the heartbreak. Where Thomas and Forever in Motion succeeds is in delivering jubilant ecstasy through out the tracks. In “Don’t Lose Heart,” He sings, “But count your lucky stars/Don’t lose heart/Don’t let that fire die/The world needs you now more than you’ll ever know.”
Thomas seems to be taking his cues from songwriters in the vein of Kris Kristofferson and Townes Van Zandt and yet it all feels very individual to him. This is a must have for fans of strong songwriters with a great deal to say.
