Weed Priest is self titled the debut album of the Galway, Ireland, based Stoner, Doom metal with the same name. These boys write some long unhurried songs that take their dear sweet time to unfold and reveal themselves.

Starting off with “Final Spell,” it’s a drawn out gloomy dirge in the vein of Sleep. “Erictho” is a similarly sludgy mind achingly slow rocker with some nice changes toward the end, as it picks up speed and the drummer wakes up to beat the crap out of everything.

“Thy Kingdom Gone” is a little more animated and perks up like a giant sloth on an energy drink. This is one of the more fun and accessible tracks on the disc.

Three of the six songs here clock in at over ten minutes in length, and lumber forward like exhausted men, overburdened and trudging uphill at all costs. Intense and purposeful, these guys are good at what they do and it’s a refreshing distraction. The deep rutted groove is where they dwell and they are buried deep within.
