Natural Child Own the Night
Natural Child
W/ Faux Ferocious, Golden Pelicans, & Foul Shot
May 12 @ Will’s Pub, Orlando, Florida
Nashville, Tennessee’s Natural Child are the best mix of long haul truckin’ tunes your going to get in one sitting, ever. No, really. Don’t yell back at the screen while I’m still typing this.
There’s shades of ’74 era Stones, Waylon Jennings at his coked-to-the-gills-whiskey-soaked best, David Allen Coe’s dirty sing-alongs, New Riders of the Purple Sage sweet harmonies; and just to make it interesting, enough ‘Seek and Destroy’ Iggy and the Stooges neurotic psychosis to keep you movin’ as the last of the white crosses sweats out of your blood stream.
Tonight Foul Shots from Orlando kicked off the show with a raw, short set of blasting, unrefined bursts of squalid punk noise. Foul Shots were tough and solid, through and through. Golden Pelicans, also from Orlando, took the stage with a commanding presence. Punk cut from a ’77 era cloth, and vocals as subtle as a bastard file, they proudly
wore their Clash-isms on their sleeves. Golden Pelicans weren’t interested in breaking new musical ground, and they positively killed. And really, do you want to argue with someone wearing a gator skull around his neck?
Faux Ferocious came from Nashville as well. Their brand of punk had clean lines, and angular tempo shifts. Refined, with an almost arty post-punk approach which felt quirky and effortlessly eccentric, Faux Ferocious were memorable and have teeth to sink into that part of your memory where almost nothing sticks.
Natural Child are a trio who tonight were a quartet, augmented by a keyboard. And without a whole lot of hoopla, they took the stage, and got to down to the nitty gritty of being the next great band the road made. See, the road eternal will make or break an artist. And Natural Child have seamless vocals, tight rhythms and a musical ESP that
comes from having made a midnight deal at a crossroads or wearing the rubber off of more tires than you thought was humanly possible. The relentless gigging has turned these guys into beer soaked, sweat stained, music machine. They ran down numbers about being stuck in shit relationships, weed, beer, women and not knowing when to quit.
So if you’re wondering what ever happened to Beavis and Butthead post TV and film career, they started a kick-ass ass throwback band so retro they’re beyond contemporary. The only other bands doing what they do, have been at it for forty or more years. Natural Child are earning their place as a formidable live act and one who is best seen in a hole in a wall bar. Do so now, before everyone else gets wise and tickets are out of your price range.
