They say it’s important to keep active and intellectually engaged once you retire. For a lot of reasons. Good for the mind and body, some people even use this time to embark on second career. Such is the case of the four gents in Geezer, who have been inspired to use their golden years to make a sensational racket.

With a collective age of 327 the youngest being bassist Calvin Sizemore at 79, Geezer have decided to try their liver spotted hands at this rock thing. With this, the bands first and eponymous release, they take out their hearing aids, turn up the amps, and go for broke.

The band is in fine form on the classic “California Sun,” making sure it’s still a great number to cut a rug to. And “Silly Putty Buddy” is as mindlessly fun as you’d expect it to be. Leonard Geezer pulls off a jagged, and positively combustible solo here.

“Bad Luck” is probably the brightest moment on the disc. Pumped up and positive, despite the title, “Bad Luck” is a broad shouldered tune for the ages. “Teenage Tragedy” appears twice. In the finest traditions of Neil Young and other artists who do this sort of thing. Once electric and then again acoustically. It’s a standout track and I’m favoring the quieter version.

Sarah Jean Balarezo, on backing vocals throughout the disc adds a great deal of depth and color to the performances. More alt-rock than anything else, the band deliver a youthful album of tunes that’s not to be missed. Geezer can go the distance so long as they catch a nap on the way.
