The Blind Owls

Four

Hidden Volume Records, 2018

From Corpus Christi, Texas, comes The Blind Owls. A band with a solid retro, throwback sound, that couldn’t be any more real or authentic. It would be easy, I mean really easy, to say they sound like The Beatles. More than that, The Blind Owls sound like the early Beatles, before the Fab Four truly sounded like themselves and were, to a great extent, mimicking American rock acts.

This being their formative time in Hamburg when they played four sets a night and became intimately familiar with the likes of Chuck Berry, Fat’s Domino, and The Isley Brothers. This is the jumping off point for The Blind Owls. Bright, and spirited playing is pervasive throughout these four tracks.

“Make Up Your Mind” swings with smooth backing harmonies and an agitated lead vocal imploring a love interest to quit “Wasting my time.” “It’s Alright” is a stone cold gem of a track. Playful and warmly animated, there’s a sly humor running throughout.

This sound is so forgotten and relegated to a very specific moment in time as to sound fresh and current. The Blind Owls may eventually move onto a Sgt. Peppers studio indulgence phase, or may even choose to shack up in an ashram with a bearded guru of choice. But let’s hope they take their dear sweet time getting there. I am enjoying this wide eyed, hopeful approach they bring to rock.
