These are strange times to be alive and inside; always inside.
And just in time for the exclusive, members only, clothing optional style dance party going on in the lockdown domicile of your choosing, is this brand new slab of solid tunes.
The Electric Mess have been steadfastly reliable to deliver solid, catchy garage rock, and this latest release, The Electric Mess V, continues this pattern. With punky edges, tempered and fueled by honey hued keyboards, There’s a pop sweetness flavoring all the music here.
“Speed of Light,” is seriously wonderful. Whether blowing the cobwebs off your creaky confined joints with a run around the block or domestic chores, this needs to be played at top volume. There’s early 70’s David Bowie style synths propelling this like a sci-fi drive by. “Before the World Blows Up” is strangely prescient, and the urgency of the music matches the title. An important reminder to squeeze in all the important things before you can’t. “After the Money’s Gone” is more restrained, and plaintive in it’s delivery. If you had snuck “Cesspool” onto a mix tape/CD playlist along with songs from The Rocky Horror soundtrack, it’d flow perfectly.
It’s hard not to like this. These songs bluster and strut with confident ease. One of the finest release of 2020, and the one which may help us all make sense of these times.
