You Don’t Deserve a Band like The Hairlips
The Hairlips
Independent Release, 2012
Chicago, Illinois is home to The Hairlips, are a band of modest means who
understand what makes good rock and roll. And they do it better than most. Let’s assume this is your introduction to Rock 101. Knowing this could mean the difference between hours of enjoyment or listening to boring crap ad naseum.
Good rock should be loud, with a driving and unshakable beat.
It should be memorable in some way shape or form.
There should be a measure of honesty in what’s being said.
And finally, really good rock should be a little dumb.
You got that?
The Hairlips have nailed it down and are close to perfecting it. With this release they blend solid punk with doo wop style vocals and sing about having their hearts broke. And while not revolutionary, this is a substantial recording that proves to be highly listenable time and time again. Memorable songwriting is the foundation here, and nothing to belittle. Most bands would kill to be able to write these sort of hooks.
Girl obsessed and romantics, they wear their hearts on the sleeves of their leather jackets. Among the stand out tracks is “Ugly Boys,” which delivers the hard to argue with refrain, “Ugly Boys get ugly girls.”
Currently available for free, this rocks harder than you’d expect, and is better than you deserve.
