I just found this release, and it’s a great throwback. I know it ‘s only a few years old, by a band that’s now defunct from of all places, Portlaoise, Ireland.

Portlaoise seems like a lovely town with precious little offer in the way of night life. This said it explains a lot about why Utopian ruins were so wonderful.

I’ll tell you something that’s consistently true of bands that come from the middle of nowhere, They do as they please as they are doing it to please themselves first. Quite often this is why they are brilliant.

There are four songs on here. They quality sounds little better than a high end demo, but the songs and the peformance are hard to beat. It sounds like Black Sabbath 1977 turning into 1982 all at once, with some great Ray Gillen style vocals.

It’s paper thin, and it’s free. And Utopian Ruins should be pleased with this quiet little masterpiece, because everyone who hears it will think, “Damn! Why haven’t I heard this before?”
