Cleveland, a great town for rock of many different stripes, has produced another exciting hard rock band worth paying attention to, Impending Lies. Focusing on mid-tempo numbers with crunchy guitars, and Matt Hayes fluid vocals, they seem to be designed specifically for rock radio.

With a blend of metal and some alternative touches, they garnish their sound with hints of hardcore (punk and metal), without losing a sense of melody or songwriting. Huge, aggressive riffs and driven, unrelenting rhythms are the order of the day, starting with Opening track, “Shine.”

Tackling Journey’s “Seperate Ways” with a staccato attack on the original riff, they put their own stamp on the song without inverting or mutilating it. It can be a tricky thing to tackle a popular song. Impending Lies do it well and give it the right amount of spin to make it their own. I’m gonna give Impending Lies a nickels worth of free advice, they really ought to seriously consider doing a parody of the original, super awful Journey video of “Seperate Ways.” Film on their phones and post the damn thing.

Title Track “Believe” feels epic with it’s clever presentation. Opening with synth burbling before blooming into a solid slab of rock riffing, the song is a strong close to a strong EP. Impening Lies have their eye on the prize, focusing on strong songs first, and showing off their chops in turn.
