Reel Big Fish have been at this a long time. And surprise! An anniversary is suddenly upon them. “Turn the Radio Off” came out 20 years ago and do you need a better reason for a party? After 5 or so upbeat numbers, singer Aaron Barrett announced they would be playing the album straight through. “Sell Out,” “She’s Got a Girlfriend Now,” and “Everything Sucks”were all well received. The band is in fine form and fresh. Nothing felt or sounded like nostalgia. There’s plenty of gas left in this tank.

Here’s the thing about Anti Flag. They are really good live. They played a tough set with drive and purpose. They constantly engaged the audience and intervened when a crowd surfing fan was about to be booted by security. But what was truly remarkable was that Anti Flag managed to turn the Beacham Theater with a capacity crowd, into what felt like an intimate show in someone’s living room. Drummer Pat Thetic, and bassist Chris #2, took themselves and their gear to the center of the room, where the pit was located, and closed out the show.

They were only ever performers in name. They are true to their roots. Anti Flag were there representing their place in a community. They echoed the sentiments of first generation punks, The Dead Kennedy’s, who I’d just witnessed the night before, and they spoke of standing up for one another, with dignity and not allowing themselves or others to be pushed about. Self respect, and respect of others, in all things was the take away from their set.

Ballyhoo! from Aberdeen, Maryland delivered their sunny side up reggae infused pop to a warm reception. Milwaukee’s Direct Hit! opened the show with a solid set of no-nonsense punk. Direct and tough, they were like a house on fire.
