No one’s ever going to be able to call Scott H. Biram inauthentic.
Every last damn everything about the man is as real as can be. Shit kicking boots, really well worn guitars, and road weary stories where most everything that could go wrong did. The people inhabiting Biram’s songs are desperate, and can’t help but wear troubles on their sleeves. Redemption and sin are in stiff competition with one another to see how thing’s will turn out. “Swift Drifting,” and “Gotta Get to Heaven” were stand out performances in an evening of memorable songs.
Will Brack opened the show declaring repeatedly that he owed much of his inspiration to the evening’s headliner. From Kissimmee, Brack played a spirited country blues. His own take on the one man band came compete with suitcase bass drum and songs of loss. His best number, “Osceola Wants His Head Back,” is historical, local (sort of), and memorable. Those unfamiliar with the story, give the song a listen while reading an account of the grisly end of the Seminole Chief.
The duo of Eugene Snowden and Katie Burkess performed an effortlessly soulful set of songs that hearkened back to a different time. Calling to mind the mid 60’s Stax soul catalog, the pair played deep in the pocket; finding a groove that was hard to shake. The two split up vocal duties and delivered a remarkable set.
