There’s a lot to be said for those artists who never waiver from their initial vision. Arizona’s The Supersuckers have been at it since 1988, delivering country tinged rock, and/or country music with rock edges.
Tonight, in Melbourne, The Supersuckers delivered 20 solid slabs of obstinate, blistering music. There’s no attempt here to reinvent the wheel. Just a bull headed determination to live up to their tireless, road dog reputation as the greatest rock and roll band in the world. “Roadworn and Weary,” “Creepy Jackalope Eye,” and “Dead Inside,” were all performed with single-minded precision.
Metal Marty sang lead on several songs toward the end, including a supercharged rendition of The Eagles, “Already Gone.” The show closed out with “Born With a Tail.” This is a band which must be experienced live to fully appreciate. And you’re in luck, as they are currently on tour, and stopping by your town any day now.
Local opening acts Best Supporting Actor, and Positive Chaos kicked the show off. Best Supporting Actor, a duo with a singular name, served up tried and true, straight ahead rock. No BS. No posturing, just 40 minutes of guitar and drum driven rock. Drummer Steve Keller, did double duty as singer, offering his thoughts on Ted Nugent, and Stupid White People.
The pleasant surprise of the evening was first up, Positive Chaos. Breathy, airy, and driven, this five piece displayed a wonderful sense of melody and range in their songs. Violinist Priyanka Valletta, adds unexpected color and flourishes, helping them stand apart from the standard guitar/bass/drums lineups.
“King James” was a standout track. With the steady, plodding rhythm of a steep uphill climb, the song becomes trance-like, with swirling leads, culminating in catharsis.
