Final nights of a tour can be legendarily uncertain events, even for experienced, well traveled bands. Generally falling into one of two categories: listless, exhausted and overworked; or blindingly brilliant. Seriously. I’ve seen lots of end of tour shows and I can’t think of one that falls into the “Eh, o-k.” category. It’s one end of the spectrum or the other.

Headlining act Lucifer, absolutely knocked it out of the park with their throwback 1970’s sound. Vocalist Johanna Sadonis cut a striking figure in the low light with her blonde hair, and fringed black outfit. Supporting their upcoming release, Lucifer III, the band plowed through a tough, sinewy bunch of numbers including “Ghosts,” a new single from the forthcoming release. Midway through the show the band served up a striking, true to form rendition of Black Sabbath’s “Snowblind.” The song was right at home with set of dense riffing. Lucifer’s light shines brightly.

Savage Master, a memorable 5 piece from Kentucky, echoed a different era of classic metal, with a strong emphasis on performance and visual production. Fronted by a tiny songstress with an over-sized voice, Stacy Savage, cut a commanding presence as she worked the crowd. The band, dressed in ominous red masks and chains called to mind the same sort of Imagery Ronnie James Dio often sang of in Rainbow and his self named Dio. “Myth, Magic, and Steel,” was a bruising dust-up of a song.

Closing number “Death Rides the Highway,”is worthy of a permanent spot on any and all metal playlists.

Overdose, a quartet from NYC, kicked off the show with a solid blast of dirty, grimy, no BS rock in the vein of Motorhead. I was unfamiliar with them prior to the show but am eager to hear more. Their set was the sort of no-nonsense, straight ahead, sooty blast of distorted rock that never really goes out of style and always has a built in audience. Overdose bear considerable watching.
