With distorted chords ringing out, “Dixie” Dave Collins proudly declared, “We’re Weedeater from North Carolina, and we suck! You ought to demand your money back!”
Which, you know, is a memorable way to get a party started. For over 20 years Weedeater have wrenched distorted, bleak music from their instruments. Songs that unfold at the pace of fully loaded truck struggling to crest a steep mountain road. With one crushing, molten song after another, Weedeater delivered a punishing set that spanned their catalog. This is uncompromising sludge metal at it’s finest.
Rebelmatic are from New York City, and cut from a different cloth. Lighter on their feet, with quick blasts of melodic post hardcore, they were a nice contrast in between 2 slower, heavy bands. This was a nice surprise, as I didn’t know what to expect and wasn’t familiar with the band. Frantic rhythms, bouncing bass lines, and shout along choruses make Rebelmatic irresistible. “Get it Off” has since weaseled it’s way into my subconscious and will stay there until the next time Rebelmatic come through town. “Emergency Break” is angular, with a memorable guitar riff in counterpoint to the rhythm section. This is a band demanding to noticed.
Melbourne’s own Sixty Foot Giant got things started, serving up a steady set of measured, turbid metal. Thick, pulsing slabs of dark chaos organized into agitated songs. Sixty Foot Giant are a significant musical force, and a local treasure.
