The Bloody Jug Band Bring Their Creepshow to Cocoa Saturday, October 27, The Dog and Bone, Cocoa, Florida

Swamp noir serenaders,Orlando’s Bloody Jug Band brought their one of a kind rusticated road show close to the coast, and spent the evening musing on all things macabre. This evening they performed as a sextet, and stepped lively as vocalist Cragmire Peace lead the band through their paces. Dylan, Judas Priest, and AC/DC were all reinterpreted in the bands own unique way. Blending traditional guitar with a string washtub bass, washboard percussion and colored with a harmonica and simple percussion and jug, the band wove their own original material from two CD’s with a myriad of grim and ghoulish covers.

The acoustic renderings work well, always keeping the spirit of the song at the forefront. “Devils Child,” and “Tombstone Blues,” fit well with original compositions “A Boy Named Lucy,” and “Graverobber Blues.”

An experienced and worldly confidence has replaced the bands nervous energy of their earlier shows. The BJB engaged the pre-Halloween audience, through two sets of songs about murder, mayhem and that which goes bump in the night. An expectant and glowing Stormy Jean was in fine form. Singing more leads than ever before, Jean’s voice never sounded better or more certain. And the band performs with a cool certainty and deft resolve which commands both attention and respect.

The Bloody Jug Band evokes nostalgia while being completely modern at the same time. The band’s fascination with life’s darker tales maybe the hook which piques your interest; but it’s performances like tonight’s which allows the Bloody Jug Band to stake a claim and their own well deserved and hard won identity.
