The New Riders of the Purple Sage brought their unique take on country-blues with psychedelic flair to Lou’s Blues this week. 
Groundbreaking when they introduced their particular spin on the country-rock movement that was afoot in the early 1970’s in California, the music holds up particularly well, and nothing about the music felt as though it was ready to be relegated to a museum anytime soon.
Ably led by guitarist/vocalist David Nelson, the band performed two sets at Lou’s Blues. Scheduled opening act, Samantha Fish was unable to perform. Undaunted, it was announced the NRPS would perform two sets.
With a dogged determination, this is one band that still ain’t ready to hang it up. They sounded in fine form as they tackled “Panama Red,” “Louisiana Lady,” and “Dead Flowers.” The musicianship was bright, crisp, and in fine form.
Shifting easily from folk, to country, and boogie numbers, the band displayed an easy, and at times effortless musical interplay, with pedal steel player Buddy Cage, quietly stealing the show with his emotive, and times lyrical playing.
With more than forty years of road work under them, NRPS don’t show any signs of being tired or needing to slow down.
