Anthrax – Chile on Hell

Chile on Hell

Megaforce, 2014

Representing NYC, Anthrax is the sole East Coast band amongst the Big Four thrash acts. Joey Belladonna, the singer from the anthrax dvdband’s classic era in the 80’s is back and in fine form. His voice shines and he clearly is relishing being back in the center of the storm. As a result a great deal of the set comes the band’s Among the Living and I’m the Man period.“Caught In A Mosh”, “I’m the Man,” “Indians”, “Fight ‘Em Til You Can’t”, “Madhouse” and “Antisocial” are some of the numbers in the high energy set. Their cover of AC/DC’s “TNT,” from their recent Anthems EP, lives up to it’s reputation as a crowd pleaser. And the band seems to really enjoy playing the song as well.

But why film in Chile?

“Santiago was the perfect place to film the show for this,” said drummer Charlie Benante, by way of explanation. “When we’d played there in the past, we’d finish our set, play our encore and go back to the dressing room. But every time, the fans would continue to scream and cheer and clap. I mean, they went on and on, they wouldn’t stop. One time Scott and I walked out to the side of the stage just to watch what was going on in the audience, it was intense. Why wouldn’t we want to film a DVD in front of an audience like that?

And he’s right. The audience is enthusiastic and nearly comes unhinged at times. The black clad crowd sings along with all the songs, even the new ones. The mosh pit never loses steam, and at the end of a sweat soaked set, they are still screaming for more.

The band sounds great. Founding members Scott Ian, Benante have rounded out the current line up with Frank Bello and Jon Donais, as well as the aforementioned Belladonna. The recording is crisp and visually you feel like your about to catch an flying elbow. Turn this up and mosh in the living room ’till the sofa can’t stand it!!
