The GTV’s are low-down, sneaky, up to no damn good, and God love ’em for it. This disc o’ wax is putting out some serious heaps of smoke as it spins on my turntable and my dilemma is: Do I stop playing it now and suffer, or do I wait for the fire department to be called so I can share these great songs with them on this crisp fall day?
Clearly if the local FD are people of good taste, they will be forgiving, toss off their gear and set to an impromptu dance party on the spot.
This is ’66 era flavored dance rock fueled by a bubbling organ, insistent, yet soulful drummer and consistently inventive guitar and bass.
“Just About to Lose Your Clown” swoops and swells like the best Electric Prunes number you never heard. “Pull You Down Below” is full of dark, angsty teenage drama, made for Saturday Matinee’s and drive-in films.
Chock full of instrumentals (seven for those of you keepin’ score) that’ll make you think of car chases, cheesy beach films, and crowded dance floors at soda shops, The GTV’s have channeled the best of Booker T and the MG’s and countless bands in the vein of Shadows of the Knight.
Of the current Garage and Mod movement afoot and currently recording, The GTV’s are a bright example of one of the finer bands. Relying more heavily in American soul than amped up UK acts, this is sweet, and often understated. Sh-Bang, the whole damn thing, begs to be added to to your permanent play list.
