“Dave Hartman broke a snare head! That ain’t happened since the 90’s! It’s gonna be a good night!”SCOTS VG 2015 (2)

More prophetic words have never been uttered into a microphone. Not tonight anyhow.

Spoken by Mary Huff, bassist and fashion plate for North Carolina’s inimitable Southern Culture on the Skids. The legendary band brought their low-rent roadshow to Orlando for the sort of epic show you only ever hear other people rave about.

The evening was kicked off with the three chord musings of Orlando’s own The Woolly Bushmen. Their garage minded grooves are the perfect accompaniment for what’s to come. This is the third of fourth time around this trio has shared Florida dates with SCOTS. The band was well received with their melodic delivery. “C’mon Baby,” and “I Don’t Want You” are required listening.

Southern Culture on the Skids got their party started with the Link Wray inspired “Skullbucket” and found their groove immediately. With a receptive and eager audience the show caught fire and never slowed.

SCOTS VG 2015 (22)Even with the unintended gear malfunction, the band soldiered on with “My House has Wheels,” and

the less well known “Freak Flag.”

As drummer Dave Hartman replaced his broken snare with one courtesy of John Wallace Jr., drummer from 40 Miles to Vegas, Guitarist Rick Miller related a story about the times when SCOTS used to open for themselves as a folky sort of act called The Pine Cones.

This brief respite seemed to throw the band into overdrive. With surf instrumentals, a great reading of the classic, “Funnel of Love,” before the audience participation began. Impromptu dancers made their way onstage for “Daddy was a Preacher, but Momma Was a Go-go Girl.” It might feel like it’s all over when the chicken starts to fly during “Eight Piece Box” but not tonight. There was still a “Camel Walk,” to explore. The show kept on and on. The band thought they were done. They had left the stage twice already.

You know, they swore they were done, but Rick Miller picked up his well worn black Danelectro ONE MORE TIME, plugged in and launched into “The Great Atomic Power.”  SCOTS VG 2015 (4)

When the band doesn’t want to stop playing, and the audience isn’t ready to stop listening, it’s the sort of show which bursts to the top of the list you keep in your head. The list of best shows you’ve ever seen. And it will take a seismic event to ever dislodge them.

Hoooooooo-wheeeeee!
