Dance bands don’t get enough respect. Not musically, or in any other area.

It’s easy to dismiss them as simple minded and focused strictly on the good times their move inducing grooves coax. Sego, As good a rump shaking band as you can presently find, trekked all the way cross country from the city of Angels to deliver a memorable, and spirited high octane set of hip sway sounds. The band is currently supporting their most recent release, “Sego Sucks.”

Live, the production was breathtaking. Dense and fresh, belying the four piece onstage. The arrangements were full, with dozens of musical asides, with players pulling double duty on multiple instruments.

Songs swayed, slithered, and popped, with an always insistent and propulsive rhythm. Spencer Petersen’s occasional deadpan vocal delivery were reminiscent of Zappa’s wry, removed role as a narrator. They rolled through “Heart Attack” with it’s angular guitar histrionics. “Give Me,” easily the centerpiece of the show, pushes forward with resolute conviction, compelling and confounding all at once.

It’s hard to make sense of everything Sego gives you in a single sitting. Which only leaves you wanting more.

Someday River were surprisingly compelling. Airy in shoe gaze way, with a sweeping, quietly driven rhythm that is truly their secret weapon, Someday River proved to be truly interesting. “Sleeping Sideways” deserves a spot on your permanent playlist.

0MPH from Orlando served up a set of fun, energized pop punk/indie rock that was positively combustible. A band to keep an eye out for.
