Tribute bands can be tricky things.

Sometimes hokey, leaning heavily on production and pageantry, (see every Kiss related tribute act ever). Or by simply playing songs ingrained in the audience’s DNA, nostalgia can be an easy sell.

Steeln’ Peaches have foregone gimmickry, choosing to focus on what really matters here. The strength of the songs.

The source material is demanding. Requiring more than a perfunctory competence with an instrument, the performances were solid, and true to form. For many, performers and audience, this would be enough.

Steeln’ Peaches set themselves apart by not just delivering memorable readings of “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,” “One Way Out,” and “Melissa,” but by purposefully steering far from the obvious path. The first set opened with “Back Where it all Begins,” from 1994, and closed with epic, and deeply under appreciated instrumental track, “Kind of Bird.”

The unexpected surprises in the second set included, “From the Madness of the West.” One of the few bright moments on the otherwise unnoteworthy, album “Reach for the Sky.” And Steeln’ Peaches declare their bona fides by plowing through an absolute obscurity from ABB side project, Frog Wings, “Pattern.”

With searing twin harmony leads, fierce slide work, robust vocals, and a driving, yet deeply nuanced rhythm section, Steeln’ Peaches will hopefully be around for a long time to come. To honor the legacy of 45 years of fearless music. To keep the music alive for longtime fans, and to introduce it to new generations. And hopefully, to play all night long.
