Arsun, the band, fronted by singer/guitarist Arsun Sorrenti, performed this past Saturday to a politely enthralled crowd who were there to listen intently. Opening acts can be easy to ignore, after all, people didn’t pay those ticket prices for young unknowns. But tonight there were at least 200 people close to the stage, paying attention.

The trio, with Arsun playing acoustic rhythm, Henry Munson playing light as air leads on electric guitar and Max Beirne-Shafer on bass, delivered a set of quiet ferocity. Clearly the 19 year old singer/songwriter is already displaying extraordinary promise. With a vocal style that at times recalls Lou Reed and Ramblin’ Jack Elliot’s succinct and low key delivery, his songs unspool easily, revealing themselves in their own time. The band’s set had an understated, simmering intensity. It would be easy to make endless comparisons to legendary folk artists, but Arsun’s impressive debut release Send Her My Way, and earnest performance, ensure his name will soon be added to the list of noted singer-songwriters. Arsun, the singer, and Arsun, the band, bear watching.

Headliner Cat Power, aka Chan Marshall, performed back lit, in shadow, and delivered a memorable set.

Supporting her most recent release, Wanderer, most of the set was down beat and brooding. Backed by a three piece band, her voice was in fine form as she wound her way through new and older material.

At the shows end, she brought up the lights for the first and only time, addressed the crowd directly and gushed her appreciation for her audience.
