After two very long years, Southern Culture on the Skids made their way back to Florida, where they were greeted by capacity crowds. Orlando was the final show of a three night run in Florida. Seriously, the anticipation was palpable.
The evening was kicked off by Orlando’s own The Tremolords, who had accompanied SCOTS on this most recent run of dates. With a great throwback sound, and look, The Tremolords delivered a potent set of 60’s inspired, melodic garage rock that was sinewy and light on it’s feet. They are an absolute treasure, and Orlando is lucky to have them.
So what can you say about veteran indie, one of a kind, Southern styled, country fresh legends Southern Culture on the Skids? A band I used to describe as Hee Haw on Acid, until I realized, this sold them short.
A band who during their (and your) lock down used their time to be productive and released two exceptional full length releases. Their presence on stage was overdue. They kicked off with “Skullbucket” back to back with “Voodoo Cadillac,” and served up a combustible performance.
The trio of Dave Hartman, Rick Miller, and Mary Huff, deftly worked their way through their catalog, Playing crowd favorites, “Nitty Gritty,” “Banana Pudding,” and the mandatory audience participation of “8 Piece Box.”
Longtime friend/fan Carol B. was pulled onstage and her birthday celebrated. And dammit, it was the show I needed, and had been waiting two very long years for.
The Tremolords joined them onstage for a memorable reading of The Cramps classic “Goo Goo Muck.” David Ewing and Mary Huff trading lead vocals. The final song was a barn burning rendition of “Dear Mr. Fantasy,” from the most recent release, ‘At Home With Southern Culture on the Skids.”
Rick Miller’s lengthy solo went into space, displaying an imposing ferocity. A fitting end to a cathartic performance.
